Welcome to Year Four
Mrs Carey is the Year Four class teacher.
Mr Chambers and Miss Young (in the morning) are our Teaching Assistants.
Mrs Carey is out of class on a Monday afternoon.
Homework
Reading –
We read our whole class reading book daily in school, we expect your child to read nightly their stage book and sign their reading record. Our day to change books is Friday we would like your child to enjoy, understand and be questioned on the text before changing it too quickly.
Please sign it every time you read, because when books are changed we have the Reading Wheel! Children will be added to the wheel for every time they have read and had their record signed. We then spin it 5 times to get 5 winners!
Learning Logs –
Learning Logs will be given out every 2 weeks on a Friday. The children are given 2 weeks to complete their topic centred homework project and then we will have a Learning Log Gallery in class. They get to look at each others work and vote for their favourite one. The winning Learning Logs will receive a prize and show off in assembly.
Arithmetic and Spelling –
Children will be given a page with Arithmetic and Spelling homework every Friday. This homework will be due back the following Wednesday. Children will be awarded 5 dojos for bringing their homework back by the Wednesday.
PE
This term, Year 4 will be going swimming! Swimming lessons are on a Wednesday morning, so children will need to bring in a named bag with their swimming costume and towel. They may bring goggles if they have them.

Writing & Reading
All our writing lessons link to our class book and our half term topic, in order to make them as stimulating as we can. We will be covering several different genres over the year. Within our writing, we will be developing our grammar skills. We will be practicing using more descriptive language, such as adjectives, expanded noun phrases, similes and looking a different sentence types. The children will also be taught how to select different vocabulary choices and punctuation, to make their writing more imaginative and fun to read.
Our whole class guided reading book is Thieves of Ostia. This half term, we will also be exploring lots of different types of texts through Fixing Fluency, where children get to explore, unpick and then perform the different texts.
Maths
This year we will be following the White Rose Maths scheme for our Maths lessons. Every lesson the children will have an opportunity to practise counting in different ways, arithmetic, reasoning style questions and use tools and methods to help solve problems.

In June 2025, Year Four will undertake a times table check. The children will practise in class and we will do daily times table practise in class. Here is a useful website to practise the times table check…

We also use Times Table Rockstars. If you would like your child’s login, please let a member of the Year 4 team know.

We will be following White Rose Science for our weekly Science lessons. Our topic for this term is Group and Classify Living Things! Have a look in the Document Section for the knowledge organsier.
