Year 2

Homework

Reading – 

Reading books will be given out and changed on Monday, children are asked to bring their books in each day, so we have the opportunity to read with them in school. It is important that the children are answering questions about the text.

We expect the children to read at least three times a week and have their record signed. Please sign it every time you read, because on a Monday we have the Reading Wheel! Children will be added to the wheel for every time they have read and had their record signed. We then spin it 5 times to get 5 winners of magic straws!

Learning Logs – 

Learning Logs will be given out every 2 weeks on a Friday. The children are given 2 weeks to complete their topic centered homework project and then we will have a Learning Log Gallery in class. They get to look at each others work and vote for their favorite one. The winning Learning Logs will receive a prize and show off in assembly.

Arithmetic –

This year we will be giving our some Arithmetic questions every Friday. This will be sent home physically and if completed by the following Friday (either through class dojo or handed in on paper) children will be given 3 dojos. These questions will be based on the Maths learning that week, or the Key Instant Recall Facts that we are focusing on that half term.

Spellings –

Spellings will be given out every Monday. These will focus on spelling rules or come from the Spelling List for Year 2 (see below). If children return their completed spellings before the next Monday, they will get 3 dojos.

PE

PE will take place on a Tuesday. Children are able to come to school on this day in a plain black tracksuit with no logos, plain white t-shirt and plain trainers. If you don’t have a black jumper without logos, please just wear your school jumper, cardigan or fleece.

Topic

Summer 1 – Pirates Ahoy!

Our topic this term is about Pirates!

This half term we are seeing if we can beat those cheeky pirates in the Pirate SATs!

Reading

In Year 2, we continue the Read Write Inc Phonics programme. Children will have phonics Tuesday-Friday every morning. Children are assessed at the end of every half term.

When children finish the Phonics programme they will move to a Comprehension group, where they will focus on Comprehension Skills and Spelling Rules.

Writing  

In Year 2 we will be looking at a range of texts from fairy tales to factual books. The children will write stories, instructions, recounts, non-chronological reports, formal letters, character descriptions and diaries. The writing and reading will always link to the topic for that term. Handwriting is a big focus in Year 2 and we will be starting to join our letters. Here are a list of tricky words we have to read and spell throughout the year.

Maths

This year we will be following the White Rose Maths scheme for our Maths lessons. Every lesson the children will have an opportunity to practise counting in different ways, arithmetic, reasoning style questions and use tools and methods to help solve problems.
