Year 3

Miss Nunwick, Mr Carey and Miss Watt would like to welcome you to Year 3’s wonderful web page!

Our classroom is a warm, welcoming, and joyful space where every child has the opportunity to learn and grow. We value respect and kindness, supporting one another to reach our full potential. In all we do, we aim to reflect the school’s Christian values.

In Year 3, we are committed to maintaining high standards. We expect all students to wear the correct uniform, complete assigned homework (TTRS and Learning Logs), and read to an adult at least three times a week.

HOMEWORK

  • Reading books and reading records need to be in school every day. Books that need changing should be out in the blue box. All books will be checked on a Friday. Children who read at home three times a week will be entered into a draw to win a magic straw milkshake. Reading books will be given out as soon as all children are re-assessed.
  • Learning Logs will be given out every 2 weeks on a Friday. Children are given 2 weeks to their learning log centred around our topic. Once they’re in school, we will have a Learning Log Gallery in class, where a couple of learning logs will be shown off in assembly. Learning Logs are a wonderfully way to get the whole family involved in learning.
  • Some Arithmetic questions will be given out every Friday. This will be sent home physically on paper. This homework can be handed in either through ClassDojo or handed in on paper. These questions will be based on the Maths learning that week, or the Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) that we are focusing on.

WRITING

In Year 3, we look to expand on Key Stage 1’s writing curriculum by introducing a number of new skills. We use Alan Peat sentences so that children can explore new punctuation with freedom as they write lengthier and increasingly more complex passages. From diaries to narratives to letters, Year 3 is a great time for our young people to develop their craft.

MATHS

As with the rest of the school, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme for our Maths lesson. Each lesson allows children to explore, practice, try a skill differently and go deeper into a key skill.

SCIENCE

As with the rest of the school, we follow the White Rose Science scheme for our Science lessons. Our Science focus for this half-term is Light.

MUSIC

Every Monday, Mrs. Reynolds comes to school and works with us in church; helping us understand structure, rhythm and eventually performance. Ahead of our Stone Age topic, we are beginning to learn ‘We Will Rock You’!

TOPIC

Our topic this half-term is all about the Rochdale Pioneers!

We will be learning about how a group of brave individuals put Rochdale on the map and put our British values first for the people of the borough. We will be visiting Toad Lane and getting a real sense of the Victorian struggle for fairness.

You can find the Knowledge Organiser for this half-term in the Downloads bar to the right.

PE

Children will  need to wear:
– a plain white t-shirt
– plain black tracksuit bottoms or black PE shorts (no leggings please)
– a plain black jumper or tracksuit top
– trainers

No logos or names on their tops, jumpers or bottoms please.

If you do not have a plain black jumper, children can wear their school jumpers as an alternative.

LIBRARY VISITS

Year 3 visit Balderstone Library on a Friday, a couple of times throughout the term. Children are given the opportunity to read a book together and share a love for reading.
